Coquitlam, British Columbia One
of Greater Vancouver's fastest growing municipalities, Coquitlam is notable for it's
welcoming and progressive development environment. Coquitlam achieved status as a city in
December of 1992. Conveniently located just 35 minutes from downtown Vancouver, the
City has been a focus for business and industry as well as housing and recreation.
Council's progressive attitude and policies are designed to
facilitate further development and provide speedy approval of projects. This progressive
attitude is shared by all sectors of the community - employers, employees, retailers and
consumers alike.
Residents not only enjoy above average earnings, they also have
access to excellent educational, recreational and leisure facilities as well as a wide
range of quality commercial and medical services. Close to all the varied cultural attractions and commercial
opportunities available in Canada's third largest city, Coquitlam offers a wide choice of
residential districts in which to enjoy a pleasant and convenient lifestyle.
A 1,000 acre community within a community, Coquitlam Town Centre
provides a dynamic focus, and will become a "downtown" for the entire northeast
sector of Greater Vancouver. In the mid 1970's when planning for Coquitlam's Town Centre
began, the area contained only a handful of homes and a small neighbourhood centre.
Today, there are over 7,500 homes and a wide array of services in
2 million square feet of commercial space. The 7.1 hectare (17.5 acre) Douglas College
campus welcomed its first students in 1995. As well, the City has built a municipal hall and recreation
complex in the Town Centre. The new aquatic facility, with many features including the
Lower Mainland's first 50-metre, Olympic calibre length pool with adjustable floor, a wave
pool, and physiotherapy clinic, opened its doors to area residents in 1993.
Just to the north lie the Westwood lands, sold by B.C.
Enterprises to Wesbild Enterprises Ltd. The District of Coquitlam and B.C. Enterprises
negotiated a signed development agreement for the 400 hectare tract; the sale signaled the
beginning of large-scale residential construction in Northwest Coquitlam. The forested
area of south-facing slopes will provide a magnificent setting for over 5,000 potential
new homes above the Town Centre.
Coquitlam also offers unlimited opportunities for commercial
development and Mayfair Industrial Park, Cape Horn Business Park and the new 200-acre
Pacific Reach Business Park are ideally located on the Fraser River and the Trans-Canada
Highway.
At the geographical centre of British Columbia's Lower Mainland
marketplace, the City of Coquitlam is linked to other major North American centres and
Pacific Rim markets by rail, freeway, sea and air.
