Situated on the Lake Erie shoreline in the southern portion of the Niagara Peninsula, Port Colborne is just twenty minutes from the United States, Buffalo (Peace Bridge). Port Colborne is approximately 1 hour to the Buffalo Airport and 90 minutes to Toronto Pearson Airport. The City is situated on an important highway and rail route. There is easy access to the Queen Elizabeth Way and 400 series highways that link Port Colborne to the rest of the Golden Horseshoe, Canada's most populated and wealthiest region. Sherkston Shores, 4.8 kilometers east of downtown Port Colborne, is comprised of three beaches on Lake Erie. In total, the resort has over 4 kilometers of clean sandy beaches and 750 acres of parkland. Incorporated into the resort is a 27 acre inland quarry suitable for swimming and skin diving. The resort is one of North America's largest campgrounds with 5,000 serviced and unserviced sites. Sites include luxury park model homes with rental or ownership options. The resort's beaches and other amenities are also open for day use. |

The city has increasingly turned its attention to effectively utilizing the city's waterfront and canal corridor location, taking advantage of Southern Ontario's tourism industry. For many years, the waterfront has been a recreational focal point in Port Colborne. It is used extensively for boating, sailing, water skiing, swimming and fishing. Gravelly Bay and surrounding sport fishing areas near Port Colborne, contain over a dozen species of sport fish. Special derbies are held in June and the annual bass, pike and walleye derby in August. Ice fishing is also popular in the winter months. The Sugarloaf Harbour Marina is a joint public/private sector development. It includes a 900 slip marina, up-graded park facilities and a marina centre with restaurant. A section of the Welland Canal passes through Port Colborne offering a unique attraction to tourists. It is the only municipality where an active, operating canal passes through the city centre.
